What CS2 Cases Have Butterfly Knives? The Full List of 5
Updated · ·

The Butterfly Knife is the knife everyone wants, bro. That flip animation is the most famous inspect in Counter-Strike, and it's why so many people type "what CS2 cases have butterfly knives" before they spend a single dollar on keys. Good news: the answer is short. Only five cases have ever held it, and each one gives you a different set of finishes.
Below you'll get the full list, which finishes come from which case, the real odds, the newer trade-up route, and an honest take on which case (if any) is worth opening. We haven't opened these cases ourselves for this guide. Everything here comes from Valve's patch notes and the CS2 wiki's case pages, so you're getting the facts, not a highlight reel.
The quick answer: 5 cases have the Butterfly Knife
These are the only Valve cases that can drop a Butterfly Knife in CS2:
| Case | Released | Butterfly finishes | Other knives in the gold slot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operation Breakout Weapon Case | July 1, 2014 | 13 original finishes (Vanilla, Fade, Slaughter, Case Hardened, Crimson Web and more) | None. Butterfly only |
| Spectrum Case | March 15, 2017 | Chroma finishes (Doppler, Marble Fade, Tiger Tooth and more) | Huntsman, Falchion, Bowie, Shadow Daggers |
| Spectrum 2 Case | September 14, 2017 | Chroma finishes (same set as Spectrum) | Huntsman, Falchion, Bowie, Shadow Daggers |
| Operation Riptide Case | September 2021 | Gamma finishes (Gamma Doppler, Lore, Autotronic and more) | Huntsman, Falchion, Bowie, Shadow Daggers |
| Dreams & Nightmares Case | January 20, 2022 | Gamma finishes (same set as Riptide) | Huntsman, Falchion, Bowie, Shadow Daggers |
That's it. If a case isn't on this list, it can't give you a Butterfly from the gold slot. The Butterfly was first added to the game in the Operation Breakout update on July 1, 2014, and Valve has reused it in four later cases since then. Riptide shows up as September 21 or 22, 2021 depending on the source, because Valve ships updates in the US evening, which is already the next day in Europe.

Case by case: what each one actually gives you
Operation Breakout Weapon Case (2014)
This is the original Butterfly case and the only one where the Butterfly has the gold slot all to itself. If you hit a rare special item in Breakout, it's a Butterfly. No Huntsman, no Bowie, no Shadow Daggers.
The catch is the finish list. Breakout uses the original knife finishes from the early CS:GO days, 13 of them:
- Vanilla (no finish at all, just the plain blade)
- Fade
- Slaughter
- Case Hardened
- Crimson Web
- Blue Steel
- Boreal Forest
- Forest DDPAT
- Night
- Safari Mesh
- Scorched
- Stained
- Urban Masked
So Breakout is where the classic looks live: Fade, Slaughter, Crimson Web and Case Hardened, plus the plain Vanilla Butterfly a lot of players secretly prefer. The downside is that roughly half that list is camo finishes like Safari Mesh, Boreal Forest and Urban Masked, which are the cheapest Butterflies on the market. Hitting gold in Breakout guarantees the model, not the look. Our knife tier list explains why the Butterfly sits at the top on model alone.
Spectrum Case and Spectrum 2 Case (2017)
Spectrum and Spectrum 2 share the same five-knife gold slot: Butterfly, Huntsman, Falchion, Bowie and Shadow Daggers. Both use the Chroma finish set:
- Doppler (Phases 1 to 4, plus the Ruby, Sapphire and Black Pearl gems)
- Marble Fade
- Tiger Tooth
- Damascus Steel
- Rust Coat
- Ultraviolet
This is where the flashy Butterflies come from. A Butterfly Doppler, Marble Fade or Tiger Tooth can only come out of one of these two cases. The Doppler gems (Ruby, Sapphire and Black Pearl) are some of the most valuable knives in the whole game. Our Doppler phases guide and Tiger Tooth guide cover how each one looks and why the price can jump massively between two copies of the "same" finish.
Spectrum and Spectrum 2 have identical knife pools, so the difference between them comes down to the regular weapon skins inside, plus whatever the market charges for each case and key on the day.
Operation Riptide Case (2021) and Dreams & Nightmares Case (2022)
These two again share the same five knife models (Butterfly, Huntsman, Falchion, Bowie, Shadow Daggers), but with the Gamma finish set:
- Gamma Doppler (Phases 1 to 4, plus the Emerald gem)
- Lore
- Autotronic
- Black Laminate
- Freehand
- Bright Water
If you've seen a green Butterfly in someone's loadout, it came from here. The Gamma Doppler Emerald Butterfly is one of the top-tier knives in CS2. Lore and Autotronic are also popular on the Butterfly because the bigger blade shows off the artwork. Check the Gamma Doppler phases guide before you buy one, because "Gamma Doppler" alone doesn't tell you which phase you're getting.
Fun fact from the CS2 wiki: the Butterfly Knife | Lore can roll any float from 0 to 1, so it exists in every wear from Factory New to Battle-Scarred.
Cases that do NOT have a Butterfly Knife
People get this wrong all the time, so here's the list of cases that come up in searches but don't hold a Butterfly:
- Kilowatt Case (February 2024): the first case released in the CS2 era. Its gold slot is the Kukri Knife, which was new in that case.
- Gallery Case (October 2024): an Armory case. Its rare special item is the Kukri again.
- Fever Case (March 2025): another Armory case. Its gold slot uses different knife models, not the Butterfly.
- Sealed Genesis Terminal (September 2025) and Sealed Dead Hand Terminal (March 2026): Terminals work differently from cases, and neither contains a Butterfly.
- Every other older case, including Chroma, Gamma, Prisma, Horizon, Fracture, Snakebite, Recoil and Revolution. Some of those cases hold the same *finishes* (for example Chroma or Gamma finishes), but on other knife models.
So if a site or video tells you "this new case has Butterflies", be suspicious. As of 2026, Valve hasn't put the Butterfly in any case released after Dreams & Nightmares.
What are the odds of opening a Butterfly Knife?
Valve's published odds put the rare special (gold) slot at about 0.26% per opening, roughly 1 in 385 cases. That's the same in all five Butterfly cases.
Here's how that plays out:
- Operation Breakout: every gold is a Butterfly, so your Butterfly chance is the full ~0.26%.
- Spectrum, Spectrum 2, Riptide, Dreams & Nightmares: the gold slot is split between five knife models. Valve doesn't publish how the split works. *If* each model were equally likely, which is an assumption and not a published number, your Butterfly chance would be about a fifth of 0.26%, so roughly 0.05%, or around 1 in 1,900 openings.
Then on top of the model comes the finish, the wear, and for Dopplers the phase or gem. Landing a specific Butterfly, say a Ruby or an Emerald, is a long shot stacked on top of a long shot. Our CS2 case odds guide explains how the tiers work, and the case odds and EV tool shows why the average opening returns less than it costs.
Remember the cost side too. Each opening is the case plus a key, and the standard key is $2.49 (see our CS2 key price guide). Older cases like Breakout and Spectrum don't drop much anymore, so the case itself often costs more than the key. Our discontinued cases guide explains why.
The other route: trade up for a Butterfly
Since the October 22, 2025 CS2 update, the Trade Up Contract works for knives. Valve's patch notes say:
- 5 regular Covert items can be exchanged for one regular knife or one pair of gloves from a collection of one of the items provided.
- 5 StatTrak Covert items can be exchanged for one StatTrak knife from a collection of one of the items provided.
That collection rule is the key bit for Butterfly hunters. If all five Covert skins come from the Breakout Collection, the only knife that collection can give is the Butterfly, so the model is locked in. You still don't choose the finish, so you could get a Safari Mesh as easily as a Fade, but you know it'll flip.
If you use Covert skins from Spectrum, Spectrum 2, Riptide or Dreams & Nightmares, you're back to the shared pool of five knife models. Mixing collections spreads your chances further, because each input's collection gets a shot at the result.
A couple of honest warnings:
- Coverts aren't cheap. Five Covert rifles or pistols can add up fast, and you lose all five no matter what comes out.
- The finish is still random. Run the numbers in our trade-up calculator and read the trade-up contracts guide before you commit.
Which Butterfly case should you open?
Straight talk: opening cases is gambling, and on average you get back less than you spend. But if you're going to open some anyway, this is how we'd think about it:
- Want the best chance at any Butterfly? Operation Breakout. It's the only case where every gold is a Butterfly. You trade flashier finishes for a better shot at the model.
- Want a Doppler, Marble Fade or Tiger Tooth Butterfly? Spectrum or Spectrum 2. You're sharing the gold slot with four other knives, but those finishes don't exist on the Butterfly anywhere else.
- Want a green Gamma Doppler, Lore or Autotronic Butterfly? Dreams & Nightmares or Riptide. Dreams & Nightmares was still in the active weekly drop pool when community.skin.club last checked, which keeps its supply flowing. Riptide is not in the active weekly drop pool, so most copies come from the market.
- Want one specific Butterfly? Don't open cases for it. Buy it outright on the Steam Market or a trusted marketplace, where you choose the finish, phase, pattern and float.
Before you buy any case, check the current price of the case and the key. Prices move every week, which is why we don't print a price table here. Our best cases to open guide covers how to compare them.

Buying a Butterfly outright: a quick checklist
If you've decided buying beats opening (it usually does), run through this first:
- Check the exact finish name. "Butterfly Knife | Doppler" covers four phases and three gems with wildly different prices. Make sure the listing says exactly which one.
- Check the float. Wear changes the look and the price. Our float value guide explains the ranges, and remember Doppler, Gamma Doppler, Fade, Marble Fade and Tiger Tooth only come in Factory New and Minimal Wear.
- Check the pattern. On Fade, Marble Fade and Case Hardened Butterflies, the pattern seed can change the price a lot. See our fade percentage guide and pattern index guide.
- Compare more than one market. A single listing can be way off. Our skin price checker guide shows how to compare quickly.
- Watch for scams. Expensive knives attract fake trade bots, phishing logins and API key scams. Read our trading scams guide before you accept any trade.
- Remember trade holds. Items you buy or trade for can be locked for a while before you can move them again. See the trade hold guide.
Quick reference: Butterfly finish by case
Can't remember which case your dream Butterfly comes from? Use this:
| If you want this Butterfly finish | Look at this case |
|---|---|
| Fade, Slaughter, Crimson Web, Case Hardened, Blue Steel, Night, Stained, Vanilla | Operation Breakout |
| Boreal Forest, Forest DDPAT, Safari Mesh, Scorched, Urban Masked | Operation Breakout |
| Doppler (any phase or gem), Marble Fade, Tiger Tooth | Spectrum or Spectrum 2 |
| Damascus Steel, Rust Coat, Ultraviolet | Spectrum or Spectrum 2 |
| Gamma Doppler (any phase or Emerald), Lore, Autotronic | Operation Riptide or Dreams & Nightmares |
| Black Laminate, Freehand, Bright Water | Operation Riptide or Dreams & Nightmares |
Every finish on the Butterfly comes from exactly one group of cases, so this table also tells you where any Butterfly you see in a trade or a loadout originally came from.
The bottom line
Five CS2 cases have Butterfly Knives: Operation Breakout, Spectrum, Spectrum 2, Operation Riptide and Dreams & Nightmares. Breakout gives the best shot at the model because the Butterfly has its gold slot to itself, while the Spectrum cases hold the Dopplers and the Riptide and Dreams & Nightmares cases hold the Gamma finishes. The odds are about 0.26% for any gold, and less for a Butterfly in the shared cases. Since October 2025 you can also trade up five Breakout Coverts to lock in the Butterfly model.
If you want a specific Butterfly, buy it. If you just want a shot at a knife, grab the free cases through our link, keep it cheap and keep it fun. 18+ only, and if it stops being fun, take a break.
