CS2 Case Opening Guide: Odds, Keys and Smart Tips
Updated October 10, 2026 · MyCS2Guru crew
Opening a case is one of the most exciting things in CS2. The spin, the sound, the chance of a gold item. But it's also one of the fastest ways to burn money if you don't understand how it works. Here's everything you need to know.
How official CS2 cases work
- Get a case. Cases drop through weekly drops or you buy them on the Steam Market.
- Buy a key. Official keys cost about $2.49.
- Open the case. You get one random item from the case's contents.
Official case odds
| Rarity | Color | Approx odds |
|---|---|---|
| Mil-Spec | Blue | 79.92% |
| Restricted | Purple | 15.98% |
| Classified | Pink | 3.20% |
| Covert | Red | 0.64% |
| Rare special (knife/gloves) | Gold | 0.26% |
About 10% of items are StatTrak.
Expected value
The expected value of opening a case is almost always lower than the cost of the case plus key. On average, you lose money.

Tips for opening cases
- Set a budget.
- Use free cases first.
- Know the odds.
- Don't chase a knife.
- Sell duplicates.
- Take breaks.
Common mistakes
- Opening to "make money."
- Chasing losses.
- Ignoring odds.
- Opening when tilted.
Responsible case opening
Case opening is gambling. You must be 18 or older. Set limits, take breaks, and read our responsible gambling page.
How case odds compare across rarities
To really understand case opening, look at what the odds mean over many openings. If you opened 1,000 official cases, on average you'd expect roughly:
| Rarity | Expected count in 1,000 cases |
|---|---|
| Mil-Spec (blue) | about 799 |
| Restricted (purple) | about 160 |
| Classified (pink) | about 32 |
| Covert (red) | about 6 |
| Rare special (gold) | about 2 to 3 |
That's around $2,490 in keys alone, plus the cost of the cases. Most of what you get back is blue and purple items worth a fraction of the key price. This is why opening cases is entertainment, not investment.
StatTrak explained
StatTrak items have a counter that tracks your kills with that weapon. They make up about 10% of case drops and usually sell for more than the regular version. StatTrak knives exist too, and they can be worth significantly more than non-StatTrak ones. A StatTrak counter also shows to other players when you get kills, which some players love.
Knives and gloves
Rare special items are knives and gloves. Each case has a specific pool of rare specials. Some cases contain classic knives, others contain newer knife types, and some contain gloves. The pool matters a lot for case value. Cases with popular knives tend to be more expensive and more in demand.
Souvenir packages and capsules
Not everything you open is a weapon case:
- Souvenir packages drop during Majors and contain souvenir skins with tournament stickers.
- Sticker capsules contain stickers, often Major team or player stickers.
- Music kit boxes, patch packs and graffiti boxes contain cosmetic items.
Each has its own odds and value structure. Sticker capsules from Majors can rise in value after they stop being sold.
Steam case opening vs site case opening: which is better?
Neither is "better" financially. Both have negative expected value. The difference is the experience:
- Steam cases feel classic and the items go straight to your inventory, but you need keys and there are no extra games.
- Site cases don't need keys, show odds clearly, let you play case battles and other games, and give free cases with FREECASES4U. Withdrawals take a step more.
Many players use both: open the odd Steam case for nostalgia and use sites for battles and free cases.
A budget plan for case opening
| Budget per month | Suggested approach |
|---|---|
| $0 | Free cases with FREECASES4U, daily cases, weekly drops |
| $10 | A few cheap cases or small battles |
| $50 | Mix of cheap cases and battles, withdraw any good hit |
| More | Only if you can comfortably afford to lose it all |
The key rule: decide the budget before you start, and never top up after hitting it.
Case opening myths
| Myth | Reality |
|---|---|
| Opening at certain times gives better odds | Odds are fixed |
| A case is "due" to drop a knife | Each opening is independent |
| Sites give better odds to new players | Provably fair systems don't work that way |
| You can predict the next drop | You can't |
How to open cases safely on skin sites
- Use a trusted site: Clash.gg or CSGOEmpire.
- Start with free cases from FREECASES4U.
- Check each case's odds and expected value.
- Set a budget before you deposit.
- Withdraw good hits instead of re-gambling them.
- Take a break if you're on a losing streak.
Is case opening gambling?
Yes. You're paying money for a random chance at items with real-world value. That's why skin sites require you to be 18+ and why some countries regulate or ban it. Treat it the same way you'd treat any form of gambling: fun in moderation, dangerous when it gets out of control.
How to calculate a case's expected value
If a site shows the items and odds, you can estimate expected value (EV) yourself:
- For each item, multiply its value by its chance (as a decimal).
- Add up all the results.
- Compare the total to the case price.
Example: a case costs $5 and contains an item worth $100 at 1%, an item worth $10 at 9% and an item worth $2 at 90%. EV = (100 × 0.01) + (10 × 0.09) + (2 × 0.90) = 1.00 + 0.90 + 1.80 = $3.70. So on average, you'd get back $3.70 per $5 case, a loss of $1.30 per opening. This is the math behind every case, and it's why setting a budget matters.
Final word
Case opening is part of the fun of CS2. The anticipation, the spin, the rare gold flash. Enjoy it for what it is: entertainment with a price tag. Use free cases first with FREECASES4U, understand the odds and expected value, set a budget and stick to it. Before you open any case
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What's my budget? | Prevents chasing losses |
| What are the odds? | Most openings return less than they cost |
| Is the site provably fair? | Lets you verify results |
| Do I just want a specific skin? | Buying it directly is usually cheaper |
| Am I 18+ and is it legal here? | Required |
Buying vs opening
If you want a specific skin, buying it directly from a marketplace is almost always cheaper than trying to unbox it. Case opening is for the excitement of the open, not for getting a particular item cheaply. Keep that in mind and you'll have more fun with less regret.
Where to open
If you decide to open cases, our partners Clash.gg and CSGOEmpire both offer case games. Read our reviews first and check for current bonuses on our promo codes page.
The bottom line
Case opening can be fun, but it costs money over time for nearly everyone. Go in with a budget, enjoy the openings, and stop when the budget is gone. If you want a specific skin, buy it directly. If you want the thrill of the open, set a limit and stick to it.
