CS2 Doppler Phases: How to Tell Them Apart
Updated October 2026 · MyCS2Guru crew

Doppler knives are some of the prettiest things in CS2, bro, and some of the most confusing. "Phase 2", "Ruby", "Black Pearl"... the name on the item just says "Doppler". Here's how CS2 Doppler phases work, how to tell them apart and what makes one worth more.
What is a Doppler?
Doppler is a knife finish (also on some weapons like the Glock-18) with a glossy, candy-like metallic look. It's split into several phases, each with a different colour scheme. Doppler knives appear in Factory New and Minimal Wear only. The item name doesn't show the phase, so you need to check it.

The Doppler phases at a glance
| Phase | Look | Rarity/value (general) |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | Dark, mostly black with pink/purple | Usually the cheapest phase |
| Phase 2 | Bright pink and purple | Often the most valued standard phase |
| Phase 3 | Green and blue, darker tones | Typically lower demand |
| Phase 4 | Blue and purple, some very blue patterns | Popular, blue-heavy patterns carry premiums |
| Ruby | Solid red | Rare gem variant, high value |
| Sapphire | Solid blue | Rare gem variant, high value |
| Black Pearl | Dark purple/black with green/blue sheen | Rare gem variant, generally rarest |
Prices change constantly and vary by knife model, so treat this as a general guide.
How to identify a phase
Because the name just says "Doppler", use the finish (paint index). Community references list the standard knife Doppler finishes as: 415 Ruby, 416 Sapphire, 417 Black Pearl, and 418-421 for Phases 1-4. Some knives use different index numbers, so check a reliable reference for your knife model. Many marketplaces show the phase directly on the listing.
You can also judge visually, but lighting and screenshots can mislead, especially between Phase 1 and Phase 3, or Phase 4 and Sapphire. Always confirm with the finish information.
What makes one Doppler worth more?
- Phase: gems (Ruby, Sapphire, Black Pearl) are worth far more than standard phases.
- Knife model: a Karambit, M9 Bayonet or Butterfly Doppler costs much more than a Shadow Daggers or Navaja Doppler.
- Pattern within the phase: for example, very blue Phase 4 patterns or very pink Phase 2 patterns can sell for premiums.
- Float: Factory New is standard; Minimal Wear sells cheaper.
- Market demand: popular knives and phases move faster.
Doppler vs Gamma Doppler
Gamma Doppler is a separate finish with greener tones, its own Phases 1-4, and a rare Emerald variant instead of Ruby/Sapphire/Black Pearl. See our Gamma Doppler phases guide.
Buying tips
- Confirm the phase from the finish data, not the thumbnail.
- Inspect in game to see the actual pattern on the blade.
- Compare prices by phase and model, not just "Doppler".
- Be careful with "fake gem" scams, where sellers show edited or misleading screenshots.
- Factory New is usually the better buy if the price gap is small.
Can you get a Doppler from cases?
Yes. Doppler knives come from cases whose rare special pool includes them, such as the Chroma-era and later cases. Any case's rare special item chance is about 0.26%, and a specific knife, finish and phase is far rarer. Want to know the maths? See CS2 case odds and how to get a knife in CS2. Common Doppler mistakes
- Assuming the price is the same for all phases.
- Mixing up Phase 4 and Sapphire in bad lighting.
- Ignoring the knife model.
- Trusting screenshots instead of the finish index.
- Overpaying for "max blue" claims without checking the actual pattern.
Bottom line
Doppler has seven variants: four phases and three gems. Check the finish index, inspect the pattern, compare like-for-like, and remember that the knife model often matters as much as the phase. Then pick the one that makes you smile every time you pull it out, bro.
Doppler patterns within phases
Even inside one phase, the pattern seed changes where colours land. A Phase 2 with lots of pink on the visible side is more desirable than one that's mostly purple. A Phase 4 with lots of blue and little purple is often called "max blue" and can sell for a premium. Phase 1 with more pink highlights can look better than a typical dark Phase 1. Inspect the knife in game to see how the colours sit on the blade from your point of view.
Doppler on guns
The Glock-18 has Doppler-style finishes too, and certain phases (like the gem variants) carry premiums there as well. The same rules apply: check the finish, inspect the pattern and compare like-for-like.
Doppler budget tips
- Phase 3 and Phase 1 are usually the cheapest ways to get the Doppler look.
- Smaller knife models (Navaja, Shadow Daggers, Gut) bring prices down a lot.
- Minimal Wear can save money if you can't see the difference.
- Be patient and use buy orders to avoid overpaying. See Steam buy orders.
Doppler FAQ (extra)
Is Black Pearl rarer than Ruby? Black Pearl is generally considered the rarest of the three Doppler gems, though exact rarity isn't published by Valve.
Can a Doppler change phase? No. Phase is set by the finish when the item is created.
Do all knives have every Doppler phase? Most Doppler knives come in all seven variants, but finish index numbers can differ on some models, so always check a reference for your knife.
