How to Jump-Throw in CS2 (No Bind Needed)

Updated October 10, 2026 · MyCS2Guru crew

In CS:GO, you needed a jump-throw bind to throw consistent lineups. In CS2, Valve made jump throws consistent, so you can just press jump and release the grenade at the same time.

How to jump-throw in CS2

  1. Hold the grenade with left click (or right click for short throws).
  2. Press jump and release the mouse button at the same time.
  3. The grenade will follow the same path every time.

Why you don't need a bind anymore

CS2 uses sub-tick timing, which means your inputs are registered precisely. Jump throws are now consistent without a bind. Some players still use binds for comfort, but they're not required.

When to use jump throws

  • Long smokes that need extra distance.
  • Smokes over high walls.
  • Lineups that specifically say jump-throw.

Practicing

Use sv_grenade_trajectory_prac_pipreview 1 in a private match to see your throw before you release. See our smokes guide.

How jump throws changed from CS:GO to CS2

In CS:GO, a jump throw's result depended on the exact timing between pressing jump and releasing the grenade, down to the frame. That made it almost impossible to be consistent by hand, so everyone used a bind that did both actions at once. CS2's sub-tick system records the exact moment of each input, which means the game knows precisely when you jumped and when you released. The result: hand-timed jump throws are consistent.

Throw types in CS2

ThrowHowWhen to use
Standing full throwLeft clickMost standard lineups
Jump throwJump + release left clickLong or high lineups
Running throwRun + left clickExtra distance
Running jump throwRun + jump + releaseMaximum distance
Medium throwLeft + right clickMid-distance lineups
UnderhandRight clickShort tosses, pop flashes

Should you still use a bind?

Some players still prefer a bind because it feels more comfortable or because they're used to it. That's fine. If you want one, many players bind jump-throws to a spare key, but check that any bind you use is allowed in the servers you play on. For most players, learning the timing by hand is quick and works everywhere.

Practice drill for jump throws

  1. Load a private match with sv_grenade_trajectory_prac_pipreview 1.
  2. Pick a jump-throw smoke on your main map (like Window on Mirage).
  3. Line it up and jump throw 20 times.
  4. Watch the landing spot each time. It should be identical.
  5. Once it's consistent, try it in a real game.

Common mistakes

  1. Releasing too late after the jump, which changes the arc.
  2. Moving slightly before throwing when the lineup is a standing jump throw.
  3. Wrong click. Some lineups use a right-click or both-click jump throw.
  4. Not checking after updates. Map changes can affect lineups.

Quick recap

In CS2, you don't need a jump-throw bind. Press jump and release the grenade at the same time and sub-tick timing makes it consistent. Practice lineups with trajectory preview.

Pro tip

Learn every jump-throw lineup from a fixed spot like a corner so your position never changes.

Why it changed

CS2's sub-tick system records the exact moment of your inputs, so jump and release timing is captured precisely. That's why binds are no longer needed.

Jump throws vs running throws

ThrowDistanceConsistencyBest for
Standing throwNormalVery highMost lineups
Jump throwLonger, higherHigh in CS2Long smokes over walls
Running throwLonger, flatterMediumQuick deep smokes
Running jump throwLongestLowerVery long lineups

Running throws are harder to repeat because your speed at release changes the result. Stick to standing and jump throws for your core lineups.

Lining up jump throws reliably

  1. Find a fixed position. Stand in a corner or against a wall so your feet are in the same spot every time.
  2. Find a reference point. A specific edge, antenna or texture to aim at.
  3. Hold the grenade fully pulled back before jumping.
  4. Jump and release together.
  5. Check the landing with trajectory preview or rethrow.

Classic jump-throw smokes to learn first

  • Mirage Window from T spawn.
  • Mirage CT for A executes.
  • Inferno CT for B executes.
  • Dust2 Xbox from T spawn.

Our smokes guide covers why each matters and how to use them.

Should you keep your old CS:GO bind?

If it still works and feels natural, there's no harm. But if you're setting up fresh, skip it and learn the timing by hand.

Jump-throw FAQ

  • Does sub-tick affect all grenades? Yes, all thrown grenades benefit from precise input timing.
  • Do lineups from CS:GO still work? Some do, many don't because maps and physics changed. Re-check them in practice mode.
  • Is there a difference between left-click and right-click jump throws? Yes, they travel different distances, so follow the lineup exactly.
