CS2 Flashbangs: Blind Them, Not Your Bros
Updated October 10, 2026 · MyCS2Guru crew
A good flash is a free kill. A bad flash is your whole team staring at a white screen while one CT sprays them all down. Flashbangs cost just $200, and in the right hands they're the most cost-effective weapon in CS2.
How flashbangs work
When a flash explodes, anyone who can see it gets blinded. How badly depends on:
- Angle: looking directly at it is a full blind. Looking to the side is partial. Facing away is nearly nothing.
- Distance: closer is worse.
- Line of sight: walls and smokes block flashes.
You can carry two flashes, and teammates get flashed too, so communication matters.
The pop flash
The pop flash explodes as soon as it comes into the enemy's view, so they don't have time to turn. Three ways to pop flash:
- Bounce off a wall or ceiling so it comes around the corner and pops instantly.
- Short throw (right-click) around a corner from close range.
- Over a wall so it drops into view and explodes.
The timing comes from practice. Use sv_grenade_trajectory_prac_pipreview 1 in a private match to see where your flash goes.
Flashing for yourself vs your team
Self flash
Throw the flash and peek immediately as it pops. Right-click flashes around corners are perfect for this because you can peek a split second after.
Team flash
Your teammate peeks as you throw. Communication is everything:
- "Flashing long, go on pop."
- "Flash in 3, 2, 1."
The person peeking should start moving just before the flash pops, so they're in position as the enemy goes blind.
Common flash spots by map
| Map | Flash | Side | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mirage | Over A ramp into A site | T | Blinds A site defenders on execute |
| Mirage | Mid flash from top mid | T | Blinds Window and connector |
| Inferno | Banana pop flash | T/CT | Wins early Banana fights |
| Inferno | B site from Banana | T | Blinds B defenders on execute |
| Dust2 | Long A corner flash | T | Lets Ts peek the long corner |
| Dust2 | B tunnels to site | T | Blinds B site on entry |
| Nuke | Outside from Ramp | T | Blinds the outside cross |
| Ancient | Mid pop from T spawn | T | Wins mid control |
| Anubis | Bridge flash | T | Helps cross mid |
Defensive flashes (CT)
Flashes aren't just for attacking. CTs use them to:
- Re-peek angles: flash over a choke and peek as the Ts are blinded.
- Stop rushes: a flash into a choke during a rush blinds multiple Ts at once.
- Retakes: flash the site before swinging in together.
How to avoid team flashing
- Throw where only enemies are looking. If your teammate is facing the same direction, you'll blind him.
- Call it every time. Even a quick "flashing" helps.
- Know the bounce. A flash that hits a wall and bounces back can blind you.
- Don't throw when teammates are peeking ahead of you.
Advanced flash tips
- Flash over the top. Throw flashes high so they pop above a wall and drop into view.
- Delay flashes. A second flash a few seconds after the first catches players who turned back.
- Fake flashes. Sometimes just the sound of a flash bounce makes defenders turn away, giving you a free peek.
- Flash yourself into position. Sometimes you can flash and run past an angle.
Common flash mistakes
- Flashing too early. If the peek isn't ready, the flash is wasted.
- Flashing your team. Always communicate.
- Throwing flashes straight at enemies. They see it coming and turn away.
- Not buying flashes. At $200, there's no excuse on full buys.
- Throwing both flashes at once. Use one now, save one for later.
Practice routine
| Drill | Time |
|---|---|
| Learn 2 pop flashes on your main map | 5 min |
| Practice right-click self flashes | 3 min |

Flashbang mechanics in more detail
Understanding exactly how flashes work helps you throw better ones and avoid getting blinded:
- Pop time: a flashbang explodes about 1.5 seconds after being thrown.
- Blind duration: depends on how directly you face the flash and how close you are. A full face-on flash at close range blinds for several seconds; a flash behind you barely affects you.
- Partial blinds: if the flash is at the edge of your view, you'll get a shorter, partial blind where you can still see some of the screen.
- Sound: the high-pitched ringing after a flash also makes it harder to hear footsteps.
- Team flashes: your own flashes affect teammates just as much as enemies.
Pop flash practice routine
| Step | Drill |
|---|---|
| 1 | Pick one corner you peek often on your main map |
| 2 | Stand close to the corner and right-click throw the flash against the wall |
| 3 | Watch from the enemy's side to see when it becomes visible |
| 4 | Adjust until it pops right as it clears the corner |
| 5 | Practice throwing and peeking immediately |
Use sv_rethrow_last_grenade while standing on the enemy's side to watch your flash pop over and over.
Flash etiquette in pugs
- Always call your flash.
- Don't throw flashes behind your teammates.
- If you blind a teammate, say sorry and call where they should look.
- Don't flash on eco rounds unless it's part of a plan.
- Save your second flash for re-peeks or retakes.
