CS2 Decoys: The $50 Mind Game
Updated October 10, 2026 · MyCS2Guru crew
The decoy is the cheapest grenade in CS2 at $50, and most players forget it exists. That's exactly why it works. A well-timed decoy makes CTs think you're somewhere you're not, baits AWPers into looking the wrong way, or sells a fake execute.
How a decoy works
- When thrown, it fires bursts of gunshot sounds that mimic the last weapon you had out.
- It can appear on the enemy radar like a player.
- After about 15 seconds, it explodes for a small amount of damage.
- It's quiet to buy and quiet to throw, so enemies often don't realize it's fake.
Smart ways to use decoys
1. Fake a site presence
Throw a decoy toward one site while your team goes to the other. CTs hear rifle fire and see a red dot and may rotate early.
2. Distract an AWPer
Throw a decoy near an AWPer's angle. If they look at the decoy, you get a free peek.
3. Fake a rotation
On CT side, a decoy in a rotation path can make Ts think a CT is coming to flank.
4. Hide your position
Throw a decoy near you when you're lurking, so enemies don't know which sound is the real you.
5. Finish a damaged player
The decoy explosion only does a tiny bit of damage, but it's enough to finish a player on 1 HP.
Decoys and sound
The power of a decoy is that it uses CS2's audio. Players listen for footsteps and gunfire to figure out where enemies are. A decoy creates convincing noise. Pick your weapon carefully before throwing: if you have an AWP selected, the decoy sounds like an AWP, which is scary for the enemy.
Decoy combos
| Combo | How |
|---|---|
| Decoy + fake execute | Decoy, smoke and some footsteps at one site, then rotate |
| Decoy + lurk | Decoy in one area, lurk in another |
| Decoy + AWP | Draw the AWPer's attention, swing on the distraction |
| Decoy + retake | Make Ts think the retake is coming from a different direction |
When decoys don't work
- Against experienced players who know decoy sounds.
- When you throw it at an obvious, impossible spot.
- Without the rest of the team selling the fake.
Common decoy mistakes
- Throwing it randomly. It needs a plan.
- Using it instead of real utility. Smokes and flashes come first.
- Throwing it at the same spot every round. Enemies catch on.
- Forgetting it exists. It's $50. Use it.
How decoys fit into a utility setup
Most players carry smoke, flash, molotov and one more. If you have a spare slot and $50, a decoy can give you an edge that a second flash wouldn't. Try adding it to your fakes and lurks and see how often enemies fall for it.

Advanced decoy plays
The double fake
Throw a decoy at one site and make footstep noise at the same site with one player, while the rest of the team walks silently to the other site. The combination of gunfire, radar signals and footsteps can pull two CTs into a rotation.
Decoy for clutches
In a 1v1, throwing a decoy to one side can make the enemy think you're there, giving you a free angle on them when they turn. It's especially effective when the enemy is defusing or holding a bomb.
Decoy to bait utility
CTs often throw molotovs and HEs at sounds of gunfire near chokes. A decoy there might bait out their utility, making your real execute easier.
Decoy plus AWP sound
With an AWP selected, throw a decoy into a long sightline. The enemy hears AWP shots and may avoid peeking that angle, giving your team free movement elsewhere.
Decoy FAQ
- How many decoys can I carry? One decoy, as part of your four-grenade limit.
- Can a decoy kill? Its explosion only does a tiny amount of damage, enough to finish a 1 HP player.
- Do decoys work against good players? Less often, but a well-timed decoy can still create doubt for a second, which is sometimes all you need.
- Should I buy a decoy over a second flash? Usually no. Buy it when you have a specific plan or a spare slot and $50.
Decoy timing tips
A decoy works best when it matches what the enemy expects. Throw it at the same time your team would normally hit, not during a quiet moment when nothing else is happening. Pair it with real utility like a smoke or a flash at the fake site, and have one player make footsteps nearby. The more senses you fool, the more convincing it is. And don't overuse it: a decoy every round becomes predictable, while a surprise decoy once or twice a half can swing a key round.
Quick summary
Decoys are cheap tricks. Use them with a plan, pair them with real utility, and don't spam them.

Decoy mechanics in more detail
- Duration: fires for around 15 seconds before exploding.
- Sound: imitates the gunfire of the weapon you had out when you threw it, in bursts.
- Radar: may appear as a player on the enemy radar when detected.
- Damage: the final explosion does a tiny amount of damage.
- Price: $50, the cheapest utility.
Choosing the right weapon sound
| Weapon selected | Effect on enemies |
|---|---|
| AWP | Very scary, makes CTs avoid that angle |
| AK-47 / M4 | Convincing rifle fire |
| Pistol | Sounds like an eco or a weak player |
| SMG | Sounds like an aggressive push |
Switch to the weapon you want the decoy to imitate before you throw it.
Map-specific decoy ideas
- Mirage: throw a decoy into B Apartments while your team hits A to make CTs think B is under attack.
- Inferno: a decoy in Banana while you hit A can hold the B CTs in place.
- Dust2: a decoy on Long while you rush B Tunnels can slow down rotations.
- Nuke: a decoy on Outside while you hit Ramp can pull an AWPer outside.
How to read enemy decoys
If you hear gunfire but see nobody, and the shooting has a repetitive rhythm, it's probably a decoy. Check your radar and listen for real footsteps. Don't rotate on decoy sounds alone.
Decoy practice
Throw decoys into common areas in a private match and listen from where an enemy would be. You'll learn which spots sound convincing.
