CS2 Knife Not Showing in Inventory: Every Cause and the Fix That Works
Updated · ·

Few things in CS2 make your stomach drop like opening your inventory and not seeing your knife, bro. Before you panic, know this: most of the time the knife is fine. It's listed somewhere, sitting in a storage unit, locked by a trade rule, or Steam's servers are just slow. A smaller number of cases are trade reversals or scams, and those need you to move fast. This guide goes through every common cause, how to tell which one you're dealing with, and what to do about it.
Quick note on how we wrote this: we didn't lose a knife to test this. The causes and fixes come from Steam's own settings and support pages, Valve's Trade Protection rules, and the problems players report again and again on Steam and Reddit threads. Steam changes things from time to time, so if a menu has moved, look for the same setting nearby.

First, figure out where it's missing
"Not showing" means three different problems, and each has different causes:
- Missing from your Steam inventory (in the Steam client or on steamcommunity.com).
- Missing in game (it's in your inventory but you don't see it in matches, or the CS2 inventory screen doesn't list it).
- Missing on a trading or case site (Steam shows it, but a site's deposit list doesn't).
Open your Steam inventory in a browser first. If the knife is there, skip to the in-game or website sections. If it's not there at all, start with the next section.

If it's gone from your Steam inventory
1. You listed it on the Steam Community Market
This catches a lot of people. When you list an item for sale on the Steam market, it leaves your inventory while the listing is active. Go to the Community Market page and look under "My listings." If the knife is there, cancel the listing and it comes back to your inventory. Also check "My market history" in case it actually sold.
2. It's in a storage unit
CS2 storage units can hold up to 1,000 items, and that includes knives. Anything inside a storage unit disappears from your normal inventory and from every trading site. Launch CS2, open your inventory, find the storage unit and retrieve the knife. If you're not sure you used one, look for any storage unit in your inventory and check what's inside.
3. It's in a pending trade or an escrow hold
If you sent a trade offer that includes the knife and the other side hasn't accepted, it's not gone, but it's tied up. Check your sent offers and cancel any you don't want. Trades made without a Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator can also sit in a hold for up to 15 days before items move. During that time they're out of your inventory. Our CS2 trade hold guide covers how long each type of hold lasts.
4. A trade was reversed
Since Valve added Trade Protection in 2025, items received in a trade are protected for 7 days, and the original owner can reverse the trade inside that window. If you got the knife in a trade and it vanished a few days later, a reversal is the likely reason. Check your trade history: open Steam, go to your inventory, and pick "Trade History" from the menu. A reversal shows up there.
This is also why you should be careful buying a knife from a stranger for cash outside a marketplace. They can take the knife back through a reversal and keep your money.
5. It was moved by a scam or a stolen account
If the knife isn't listed, isn't stored, isn't in a pending trade and your trade history shows it going somewhere you didn't send it, treat it as a security problem:
- Change your Steam password right away and turn on the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator if you haven't.
- Revoke your Steam Web API key. A very common scam steals your API key and uses it to swap or cancel trade offers so your items go to the scammer. Go to Steam's API key page and revoke any key you don't recognize.
- Deauthorize all other devices from Steam Guard settings so any session the scammer has gets logged out.
- Contact Steam Support with the trade details. Be realistic though: Steam's support pages say they generally don't restore items lost to scams or trades.

If it's in Steam but not showing in game
6. You only equipped it for one side
In CS2, your knife is equipped separately for Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists. If you set it on one side only, the other side shows the default knife. Open your loadout, go to the knife slot, and equip it for both teams.
7. CS2 isn't connected to the game servers
When CS2 can't reach Valve's game coordinator, your inventory can look empty or only show default items. You'll often see a connection warning on the main menu. Restart the game, check Steam's status, and give it a few minutes. If Steam is down for maintenance, there's nothing to fix on your side.
8. The inventory filter or sorting is hiding it
Sounds silly, but it happens. If you searched for something or picked a filter in the CS2 inventory screen, the knife may be filtered out. Clear the search box and set the view to show all items.
If Steam shows it but a site doesn't
9. Your inventory is private
Trading sites and case sites can only read a public inventory. In Steam, go to your profile, choose Edit Profile, then Privacy Settings, and set Inventory to Public. It can take a little while before sites see the change.
10. The knife is trade-locked or Trade Protected
A knife you just received in a trade, or bought on a market, may be locked. Under Trade Protection, it stays in your inventory and you can use it in matches, but it can't be traded or listed on the market for 7 days. Many sites either hide locked items or show them greyed out. Wait until the lock ends. Steam shows the date on the item's details.
Fresh Steam Guard changes can trigger their own restrictions too. If you recently set up the Mobile Authenticator or changed your password, trading can be limited for a while.
11. The site's inventory cache is out of date
Most sites cache your inventory and refresh it every so often. Look for a refresh button on the deposit page and use it. If the knife is new to your account, give it a few minutes and try again. Also make sure your saved trade URL on the site is your current one. If you regenerated it in Steam, the old one stops working. Our Clash.gg trade URL fix covers that in detail.

A quick checklist you can run in five minutes
If you don't want to read everything above, run through this in order:
- Check the Steam market for active listings and recent sales.
- Open CS2 and look inside every storage unit.
- Check sent trade offers and cancel any you didn't mean to keep.
- Open trade history for reversals or trades you don't recognize.
- If something looks wrong, change your password, revoke your API key and deauthorize devices.
- Equip the knife for both sides in your loadout.
- Make your inventory public.
- Check the item's details for a lock date.
- Hit refresh on the site you're using and recheck your trade URL.
How to stop it happening again
- Use the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator. It removes long escrow holds and makes it much harder for anyone to take over your account.
- Never sign in to Steam through a pop-up on a random site. Fake login windows are the top way accounts get stolen. Real sites send you to steamcommunity.com.
- Don't create an API key unless you really need one, and never paste one into a site you don't trust.
- Be careful with cash trades. With Trade Protection, a seller who receives cash outside a marketplace can still reverse the trade inside the window.
- Keep track of what you store. If you use storage units, name them so you know what's in each.
What if you want to sell or swap the knife?
Once your knife is back and unlocked, you've got a few options:
- Clash.gg lets you deposit skins for site balance, which you can use on its marketplace or games. Through our link you get free cases to start, no code needed.
- CSGOEmpire runs a peer-to-peer market where you list the knife and another user buys it. Until the trade completes, the knife stays in your Steam inventory, which is normal on peer-to-peer sites.
- The Steam market is simple, but the money stays in your Steam wallet.
For a side-by-side of the ways to turn a skin into money, see our guide to selling CS2 skins. To check what your knife is worth first, try our CS2 skin price checker guide.

The bottom line
A CS2 knife that's "not showing" is almost always listed on the market, stored in a storage unit, tied up in a trade or hold, Trade Protected, or hidden by a private inventory or a stale site cache. Check those first, in that order. If your trade history shows the knife leaving without your say-so, secure your account straight away, revoke your API key and contact Steam Support. Then, once it's back and unlocked, you can price it, sell it or play with it the way you planned.
