How to Change the HUD Color in CS2
Updated October 10, 2026 · MyCS2Guru crew
Your HUD (heads-up display) shows health, armor, ammo, money and the kill feed. Changing its color can make it easier to read at a glance, especially if the default blends into certain maps.
Method 1: Settings menu
- Open Settings.
- Go to Game, then HUD.
- Find HUD Color.
- Pick a color from the list.
- Changes apply immediately.
Method 2: Console
- Enable the developer console in Settings, Game.
- Press the tilde key to open it.
- Type
cl_hud_colorfollowed by a number.
| Value | Color |
|---|---|
| 0 | Default |
| 1 | White |
| 2 | Light blue |
| 3 | Dark blue |
| 4 | Purple |
| 5 | Red |
| 6 | Orange |
| 7 | Yellow |
| 8 | Green |
| 9 | Aqua |
| 10 | Pink |
Values can shift between updates, so try a few and pick the one you like.
Which color is best?
There's no single best. Pick a color that contrasts with the maps you play and doesn't distract you. Many players use white or light blue for clean readability. If your crosshair is cyan, a different HUD color can help the two stand apart.
Other HUD tweaks
hud_scalingchanges HUD size (0.5 to 0.95).cl_hud_radar_scalechanges radar size.cl_radar_always_centered 0shows more of the map on your radar.cl_showloadout 1keeps your weapons shown on the HUD.
Why customize your HUD at all?
The HUD is information you check dozens of times per round: your health after a duel, your ammo before a re-peek, your money in buy time, the kill feed for who's still alive. If any of that is hard to read, you lose fractions of a second every time you look. Over a match, that adds up, and in clutch moments it can decide a round.
Recommended HUD setup for competitive play
| Setting | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| HUD color | White or light blue | High readability on most maps |
| HUD scale | 0.85 to 0.95 | Smaller HUD, more screen space |
| Radar scale | 0.8 to 1.0 | See more of the map |
| Radar centered | Off | See more ahead of you |
| Radar rotation | On | Matches your view direction |
| Show loadout | On | Always see your weapons and nades |
Radar settings that actually help
The radar is part of your HUD and probably the most important part after health and ammo. Try these console commands:
cl_radar_scale 0.4zooms the radar out so you see more of the map.cl_radar_always_centered 0keeps the radar from wasting space behind you.cl_hud_radar_scale 1.15makes the radar itself bigger on screen.cl_radar_rotate 1rotates the radar with your view.
Experiment in a private match on your main map until you can glance at the radar and instantly know where your teammates are.
Team colors
CS2 assigns each teammate a color shown on the radar and scoreboard. You can make it easier to tell teammates apart by keeping your own HUD color different from common team colors. That way, your health and ammo never blend in with the radar dots.
Common HUD mistakes
- HUD scale too large, covering important parts of the screen.
- Radar zoomed in too far, so you miss nearby enemies spotted by teammates.
- HUD color that matches your crosshair, making both harder to read.
- Changing the HUD constantly. Like crosshairs, consistency helps your brain find information fast.
Saving your HUD settings
Your HUD settings save automatically, but if you want to be safe, add the commands to an autoexec.cfg file. Then they load every time you start CS2, even after updates or on a new PC.

Quick recap
Pick a HUD color that you can read on every map, set a comfortable HUD scale, zoom out your radar and save everything in an autoexec.

HUD color and accessibility
If you have color vision deficiency, HUD color makes a big difference. Players with red-green color blindness often find white, light blue or yellow HUD colors easiest to read. CS2 also has color-blind friendly options for some elements, so look through the settings menus. Pairing a readable HUD with a high-contrast crosshair from our crosshair settings guide makes the game much easier to read.
HUD color FAQ
- Does HUD color sync between PCs? Yes, through Steam Cloud, as long as it's enabled.
- Can I change the color of the kill feed? Not separately, but the overall HUD color affects much of the interface.
- Will a different HUD color help me aim? Not directly, but a readable HUD means less time looking away from your crosshair.
- What do pros use? It varies a lot. Many keep it simple with white or the default color.
Pick something readable, save it in your autoexec, and move on to the settings that matter more for your aim, like mouse settings.
