How to Use Steam Buy Orders for CS2 Skins
Updated · MyCS2Guru crew

Paying full price on the Steam Market, bro? Stop. Buy orders let you name your price and wait. Here's how they work, how to price them and what they can't do.
What a buy order is
A buy order is a standing offer: "I'll pay up to $X for this item." When a seller lists at or below your price (or sells directly to the highest buy order), your order fills automatically and the item lands in your inventory.

How to place one
- Open the Steam Community Market and find the exact item (name + wear).
- Click Place buy order.
- Enter your max price and quantity.
- Agree to the terms and confirm (Steam may ask for mobile confirmation).
- Wait. You can view active orders on the Market page.
Matching rules
- Orders match the exact item name and wear (e.g. "AK-47 | Redline (Field-Tested)").
- They don't consider float, pattern, stickers or name tags. You'll get a random copy.
- The highest buy order is filled first when someone sells instantly.
- If several orders have the same price, the earliest one usually fills first.
So buy orders are perfect for items where float and pattern don't matter much, and bad for items where they do.
How to price a buy order
- Look at the order book: highest buy orders and lowest listings.
- Check price history for recent sales.
- Place slightly above the highest existing buy order if you want a faster fill.
- Place lower if you're patient and happy to wait.
The gap between the highest buy order and lowest listing is your potential saving.
Wallet requirements
You need enough Steam Wallet funds to cover the order. If your balance drops, Steam may cancel orders it can't pay for. Market access also requires meeting Steam's eligibility rules (like Steam Guard enabled for a period and a qualifying purchase). See buy CS2 skins with Steam Wallet.
Cancelling
Go to the Market page, find My buy orders, and cancel. Funds stay in your wallet.
Tips to save money
- Use buy orders for common, liquid items like cases and popular skins.
- Be patient during quiet periods.
- Avoid hype spikes (e.g. right after a pro uses a skin or an update).
- Adjust periodically if the market moves.
- Don't use buy orders for rare floats or patterns. Buy those individually after inspecting.
Buy orders and selling
When selling, you can "sell to the highest buy order" instantly. That's fast but usually below the lowest listing. Remember fees: see Steam market fee.
Buy orders vs third-party markets
Third-party markets may offer lower prices or cash options, with their own fees and risks. CSGOEmpire's marketplace lets eligible users buy skins with crypto (not in the US, UK, Australia and some other countries). See buy CS2 skins with crypto. 18+.
| Site | Bonus with FREECASES4U | Games | Payments | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clash.gg (Top pick) | 3 Free Cases + 5% deposit bonus | Case battles, cases, upgrader, crash, roulette, plinko, mines, keno, esports | CS2 skins, crypto | Claim |
| CSGOEmpire | Free case up to $1.4k | Roulette, case battles, cases, coinflip, esports | CS2 skins, crypto | Claim |
Common mistakes
- Expecting a specific float from a buy order.
- Setting orders way below market and wondering why they never fill.
- Not having wallet funds.
- Forgetting active orders after prices change.
Bottom line
Buy orders let you pay less by waiting. Use them for liquid items where float and pattern don't matter, price just above the top order for speed, and keep your wallet funded. Easy savings, bro.
