Stickers are the quiet money in CS2, bro: the right sticker on the right gun can be worth more than the skin itself. Opening capsules is how many people chase them. Here's how CS2 sticker capsule opening works: keys, odds, Major and autograph capsules, holo and gold chances, the maths and smarter ways to get the stickers you want.

18+ for gambling sites. Opening capsules is paid chance. Responsible gambling.

Do sticker capsules need keys?

Capsule typeKey needed?
Most sticker capsules (incl. Major capsules)No
Original Sticker Capsule and Sticker Capsule 2Yes, a capsule key
Community Sticker Capsule 1Yes, its own key
Autograph capsulesNo
Souvenir packages (not capsules)No

That's the big difference from weapon cases: with most capsules, you only pay for the capsule.

Sticker capsule odds

Capsules use rarity tiers like weapon cases, but with different finishes. Commonly cited odds for a four-tier capsule:

TierTypical finishChance
High GradePaperabout 80.1%
RemarkableGlitter / holo (varies)about 16.0%
ExoticHolo / foil (varies)about 3.2%
ExtraordinaryGold (where present)about 0.64%

Within a tier, each sticker is usually equally likely. Not every capsule has every tier, so check the capsule's contents in-game.

Types of capsules

Major capsules

Released around each Major, usually split into Legends, Challengers and Contenders based on team placement. Sold for a limited time. Part of the revenue goes to teams and organisers. Prices often climb once the sale ends.

Autograph capsules

Player signature stickers from a Major. Popular players' autographs, especially in holo or gold, are often the most valuable.

Themed and community capsules

Artist-designed and themed capsules released outside Majors. Value varies hugely by design and popularity.

Expected value: is it worth it?

Most capsules return less than their price on average. Why:

  • About 80% of drops are paper stickers, often worth a fraction of the capsule price.
  • The valuable holo, foil and gold stickers are rare.
  • Steam Market prices include fees.

Exception: capsules opened during a Major sale can sometimes be roughly break-even or better if a sticker spikes later. That's timing and luck, not a sure thing.

Opening vs buying vs holding

How to open a sticker capsule

  1. Buy a capsule on the Steam Market or get one from an event.
  2. Right-click it in your inventory and choose Open (or Use on a key if needed).
  3. The sticker goes to your inventory.
  4. Apply it to a weapon (stickers are consumed when applied) or keep or sell it.

Applying stickers

  • Each weapon has a few sticker slots, and you can position stickers more freely than before.
  • Applying a sticker uses it up, and scraping removes it (it may wear first).
  • Stickers on skins add value only sometimes. Rare stickers on popular skins can add a lot, but most stickers add very little.

Smarter ways to get stickers

  1. Buy the exact sticker on the market.
  2. Buy a skin that already has the sticker applied. Sometimes cheaper than buying both separately.
  3. Open capsules during Major sales if you enjoy it, with a budget.
  4. Use free cases on sites for a shot at skins instead: FREECASES4U on Clash.gg and CSGOEmpire.

Sticker capsule mistakes

  1. Opening dozens of capsules chasing one gold.
  2. Applying an expensive sticker to a cheap skin, which usually loses value.
  3. Holding capsules forever expecting guaranteed gains.
  4. Forgetting Steam fees when calculating profit.
  5. Buying at peak hype.

Bottom line

Sticker capsules are cheaper to open than weapon cases (no key for most), but the maths still favours buying the sticker you want. Open a few for fun during a Major, keep a budget and grab free cases with FREECASES4U if you want a free shot at something nice.

How sticker prices behave over time

Sticker prices follow a fairly familiar pattern, though nothing is guaranteed:

PhaseWhat usually happens
During the saleLots of supply, prices tend to be low
Right after the sale endsSupply stops growing, and some prices start to rise
Months laterPopular stickers (big teams, star players, holo/gold) may climb, while unpopular ones stay flat
Years laterSome old stickers become rare and expensive, many don't

This is why some players buy capsules or stickers during a sale and hold them. It can work, but it's speculation. Prices depend on demand, the team's or player's popularity, and whether the sticker looks good on popular skins.

Paper vs glitter vs holo vs foil vs gold

FinishLookRarity
PaperFlat printMost common
GlitterSparklyUncommon (in some capsules)
HoloShiny, rainbow effectRare
FoilMetallicRare
GoldGold metallicRarest (where present)

Which finishes appear in which tier depends on the capsule, so always check the contents list before buying.

A quick capsule budget plan

  1. Decide how many capsules you'll open, for example 5 during a Major.
  2. Buy them during the sale, when they're cheapest.
  3. Open them and keep any sticker you like. Sell the rest if they're worth more than a few cents.
  4. Don't buy more to "chase" a gold. Buy the gold sticker directly if you want it.

More sticker questions

Can I remove a sticker and keep it? No. Scraping a sticker fully removes it, and it can't be recovered.

Do stickers make a skin worth more? Sometimes. Rare stickers (especially old holos) on popular skins can add value, but most applied stickers add little or nothing.

Can I trade capsules? Yes, capsules and stickers are tradable and marketable, subject to Steam's usual trade rules.

Are souvenir packages the same as capsules? No. Souvenir packages contain souvenir skins with tournament stickers already applied, and they don't need keys.

Sticker capsule checklist

  • [ ] I've checked the capsule's contents and tiers in-game
  • [ ] I know whether it needs a key
  • [ ] I've set a number of capsules to open
  • [ ] I've compared the capsule price with buying the sticker I actually want
  • [ ] I won't apply an expensive sticker to a cheap skin without thinking it through
  • [ ] Any sticker I don't want gets sold, not left to rot in my inventory

Opening capsules is a fun part of every Major. Just keep it to a handful, not a habit.

FAQ

Do CS2 sticker capsules need a key?

Most sticker capsules open without a key. A few older capsules need a specific key (for example the original Sticker Capsule and Sticker Capsule 2, and Community Sticker Capsule 1).

What are the odds in a CS2 sticker capsule?

Commonly cited odds for a four-tier capsule are about 80.1% High Grade (paper), 16.0% Remarkable (e.g. glitter or holo), 3.2% Exotic (e.g. holo or foil) and 0.64% Extraordinary (e.g. gold). Tiers vary by capsule.

Is opening sticker capsules worth it?

Usually not financially. Most capsules return less than their price on average. Buy the sticker you want directly if you have a specific one in mind.

When do Major sticker capsules come out?

Major capsules are released around each Major and are usually sold for a limited time, which is why prices often rise after the sale ends.
